Cremation will take place following the service. Visitation will be 12-3 and 5-8 PM Sunday and 10-11 AM Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Davison Davita Dialysis. Don was born in Elmira, NY on May 15, 1933. He moved with his family to Michigan when he was 12 yrs. Old. Don attended Davison Schools, graduating in 1952. Don excelled in sports while in high school, playing basketball, football and baseball being named All State in basketball. He made lasting friendships in high school, still meeting once a month for lunch with several classmates and talking on the phone often with an out of state teammate, hashing over games played some 60 years ago! Don attended Central Michigan University for 2 years and then enlisted in the Army's 101st Airborne Infantry and the 508th Regimental Combat team, making 29 jumps. While in the Army he became a staunch Ohio State fan, making for lots of good nature rivalry with his families many Michigan/Michigan State fans. He was a member of the Davison Country Club since 1962, becoming an avid golfer. Don had a Double Eagle at the St. Lawrence Country Club in Canton, NY and two holes in one at the Davison Country Club. He loved working with kids, spending many years coaching Little League and working with the Flint Junior Golf program. Don was a member of the MHSAA, officiating basketball for 35 years and receiving the Jim Massar service award in 1988. He had a fitting nickname for everyone and sometimes couldn't remember that person's real name! Don loved spending time with his grandchildren and the last few years were difficult for him as his health declined and he couldn't golf, run or play with them. Don is survived by his wife, Suzanne; son, Dennis (Colleen) Hammond; daughter, Erin Eickhoff; step daughter, Jeni (Darrell) Westerby; grandchildren, Josh (Regan) Eickhoff, Jason (Amanda) Eickhoff, Blake Westerby, Ian, Darcy, Conor and Keira Hammond; great grandchildren, Olivia, Cadance, Bayli, Travis, Colton and Aria Eickhoff; special neighbor boy, Donavin Rowan; sisters, Janice (Larry) Crane, Ann Hobson, Marilee (Bill) VanHorssen; brother-in-law, Jack (Paula) Brownson; in-laws, Marshall and Joyce Brownson; Aunt and Uncle, Jack and Phyllis Slocum; many nieces, nephews, friends and the mother of his children Linda Troy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Florence Hammond; stepson Wade Salgat. A special thanks to the staff at Davison Davita Dialysis, Jen (Little Pretty), Ian (Slapshot), Sue (#2) and the entire staff for their wonderful care. What we have once enjoyed we can never lose. All that we love becomes a part of us.
